New York City’s electricity infrastructure is barely hanging on, and it’s not only the trains that are using outdated rails. According to ABC7 New York, some 3,500 F train commuters were left in the dark after an explosion at an electrical substation in Brooklyn that is over a century old.
Riders were stranded for more than two hours during the evening rush hour as a result of the power loss, which started at 5:30 p.m. and caused fear and, in certain instances, medical crises.
According to eyewitness Molly Rae of ABC7 New York, some people seemed unconcerned, but for others, the scenario was catastrophic, including a pregnant mother who had a panic attack. There were 3,500 people involved in the incident, and four of them were injured slightly. However, the MTA has a lot of problems beyond only power outages.
Electricity is like air to a person; nevertheless, the MTA’s machinery is struggling to keep up due to its age, inefficiency, and failure. According to a thorough investigation by Gothamist, MTA Chief Superintendent Joseph Daidone has been known to purchase new components from eBay due to the severe state of some of the substations.
The recent explosion at the Brooklyn substation is proof that the system is susceptible to frequent faults caused by the use of unconventional maintenance procedures in order to keep the trains running.
A combination of robust infrastructure and antiquated technologies makes up the MTA’s network. Delays spread like a wave through the city when substations fail, causing subways to grind to a halt and the metropolis’ pulse to skip a beat. The fragility therein was brought to light by a recent explosion in Downtown Brooklyn, which ripped a substation door off its hinges, as described by Gothamist.
The stress from these antiquated electrical systems continues beyond the edge of the platform, which is even worse. The Gothamist said that Patrick McHugh, Con Ed’s senior VP of electric operations, said that the failure of an MTA substation affects the surrounding infrastructure, leading to delays in the delivery of power to neighboring customers.

After 77 out of 224 substations were found to be in “poor or marginal condition,” officials from the MTA emphasized the critical need for refurbishment. Gothamist said that in Albany’s legislative chambers, the much-needed $3 billion renovation continues to be debated over how to pay for it.
The latest service interruptions have been described by Governor Kathy Hochul as “unacceptable,” and she has called for an investigation to be conducted to make sure they won’t happen again. In the meantime, the fate of train riders like Molly Rae and the innumerable others who depend on the subways daily is up in the air, subject to the caprices of outdated transformers and makeshift repairs.
