Dad in Indiana Learns His Fate After Driving Into a River and Drowning His 2-year-old Daughter
Following his guilty plea, an Indiana man was given forty years in jail for his part in the drowning death of his two-year-old daughter in November 2021.
Fox News and ABC affiliate WRTV report that Jeremy Sweet of Columbus, Indiana, was given 30 years in prison on June 11 for the felony charge of neglect of a dependent and an extra 10 years because he is a habitual offender. This was after he admitted to his part in Emma Sweet’s death by drowning.
A probable cause statement says that Sweet and his daughter were last seen together on November 24, 2021. The next day, on Thanksgiving, a family member reported them missing.
Fox News said Emma probably died on November 25, the day before duck hunters saved Sweet, who is now 41 after his truck fell into the White River by mistake.
The police think that Sweet drove his truck into the river from a bank that was 15 to 20 feet above the water.
Sweet told the police that he got lost on a dirt road while trying to move the truck, which then went off a cliff and into the river.
Divers found Emma’s body on November 28, 2021, two days after they found Sweet, and took her to the hospital to get help.
“High on meth and marijuana when he drove the car into the river,” Sweet told Fox News the day after the body of his daughter was found.
At first, he told the police that Emma was out of the car and safe when the accident happened, but later he admitted that she was in the car and that he had put her on the roof to keep her safe. The police found signs that someone had been holding on to the car’s glass at one point.
The last time Sweet saw his daughter, she was on the roof of his truck “yelling for her mom,” and then he fell asleep in the truck.
Emma died of “complications of hypothermia and asphyxia due to drowning,” according to WRTV and Fox News.
As reported by Fox News, Sweet was later charged with two felonies: illegally having a needle and failing to care for a dependent person, which caused death.
The sheriff’s office told Fox News that Sweet was out on bond at the time of the incident for illegally having a gun as a major violent felon and for having methamphetamine on his person.
He told his ex-wife he was sorry for his part in the death of his daughter during his sentencing on Tuesday.
This is what Sweet said while crying: “There’s nothing I can say to change what has happened.” “But I’m so sorry, I swear to God on everything I love.”
