Chicago Police Hunt for Suspects in 4th of July Shooting That Left 2 Women and 8-Year-Old Boy Dead
Three people were killed in a shooting in Chicago on July 4. Two women and an 8-year-old boy were killed.
Multiple shooters got out of two cars and are thought to have fired several shots into a house in the city’s Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood around 6 a.m. Thursday, according to CBS News. When police arrived, they found five people who had been shot.
Someone told ABC 7 Chicago, “All I saw were two people jumping off the porch.” “I looked out the window when I heard the shots.” I believed it was fireworks.
Family members named the women who died as Capri Edwards and Nakeeshia Strong. ABC 7 Chicago reports that they were killed in the shooting. Family members said that Strong was Edwards’ aunt.
NBC Chicago says that Strong’s 8-year-old son Bryson Orr was also hit and is in serious condition in the hospital. But, as the news source said, he died later that same day. Two more kids, ages 5 and 8, were hurt in the shooting.
ABC7 reports that police think the killing was planned, but they haven’t made any arrests yet.
Edwards’ mother, Markita Scott, told CBS News Chicago that her daughter died while trying to protect her children from the shots. She also said that she hopes the killer will be caught soon.
“I’m just numb,” Scott told the news source. “I just want somebody to come forward with some kind of information so [there’s] justice for my daughter.”
Frank Mixon, Strong’s teenage son, told NBC Chicago that she was “an amazing woman.” He told the news source, “Nobody taught me how to work hard like she did.”
Thursday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson sent a message to X (formerly Twitter) in which he honored the people who had been affected by the killing.
“On behalf of the City of Chicago, we send our deepest condolences to the families and the community of Grand Crossing who lost loved ones in the shooting this morning,” he said.
“We will continue to work together with our partners at the Chicago Police Department, 5th Ward Alderman Desmon Yancy, and victim services partners to help this community heal from this terrible event,” the statement said.
