Authorities in Georgia caught a man from Oregon who got away from a prison almost 30 years ago.
Steven Craig Johnson, who is 70 years old, got out of Mill Creek Correctional Facility in Salem, Oregon, in November 1994. A flyer from the Oregon Department of Corrections said that he was in jail for sex abuse and attempted sodomy.
The flyer said the man had a “high probability of victimizing pre-teenage boys” and that kids should “not be allowed to contact him.”
Johnson, who was also known as “William Cox,” was taken by the US Marshals Service at an apartment complex in Macon, Georgia, around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, according to WMGT.
The case was taken on by the Marshals Service in 2015 because the Oregon Department of Corrections asked them to. The Diplomatic Security Service made new technology that the agency used in 2024. This technology gave them new leads in the case.
Police said Johnson stole the name of a child who died in Texas in January 1962 while he was on the run. As of 1995, Johnson was able to get a social security card and a copy of the child’s birth certificate in Texas.
After three years, he got his Georgia driver’s license. His name changed to William Cox when he moved to Macon in 2011.
Johnson is currently waiting to be sent back to Oregon. The Bibb County Jail is where he is being held.
