Man Sentenced for Fatally Stabbing Christina Yuna Lee in Her N.Y.C. Apartment
Christina Yuna Lee was brutally stabbed to death in her New York City apartment in February 2022. On Tuesday, July 30, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Jr. announced that the man who did this would spend the rest of his life in jail.
Assamad Nash, who is 27 years old, pleaded guilty in June to murder and theft in the death of Christina. He admits to following the 35-year-old woman into her Chinatown apartment and stabbing her at least 40 times, according to the police. ABC7 says that after the sentence, the judge said the defendant was a danger to society and had major mental health problems.
Assamad Nash killed Christina Yuna Lee in her apartment in a way that is hard to imagine. Bragg wrote this in a press statement.
“Ms. Yuna Lee was creative, kind, and happy, and her death devastated her family and affected the whole community for a long time,” Bragg said. “I hope that the end of this case brings comfort and a sense of justice to everyone who has been affected by Ms. Yuna Lee’s life and this tragedy.” Let us honor her memory for many years to come.
Nash killed Lee early in the morning on February 13, 2022, after following her up to her six-story walk-up apartment. Nash ran up to her and pushed her inside the apartment around 4:20 a.m. before he tried to sexually assault her. Christina called for help from inside her apartment at 4:22 a.m., which made her neighbors call 911. The police arrived a few minutes later, but they couldn’t break down the door until 5:40 a.m.
The police then found her dead from being stabbed and Nash hiding under a blanket. The police said she was dead at the scene.
According to ABC7, the victim’s father, Sungkon Lee, asked with tears in his eyes, “Why did God do such terrible things to our family?” during the sentence.
At the sentence, her mother was not there. According to ABC7, Christina’s aunt, Boksun Lee, said that the victim’s mother is still sad and weak from the loss of her daughter.
The New York Post reports that after she was sentenced, Sungkon asked lawmakers to name a new homeless center after her. “We want people to remember Christina and stop other people from going through the same thing,” Sungkon said.
The family’s lawyer, Charles Yoon, told the Post, “Having her name on the shelter will make people remember what happened and that it was done by someone homeless.” “We want to remember her and honor her so that it doesn’t happen again.”
The Post says that Sungkon also spoke out against the NYPD and said that the police failed to protect his daughter. “The police did not gain entrance into the scene of the crime until 1 hour and 20 minutes had passed since arriving at the scene,” he noted.
“The main reason Christina died happened at the scene of the crime.” We think that the cops who came were not quick enough to help. “The first job of the NYC police is to keep the people who live there safe,” Sungkon said.
Sungkon has sued the department, and the case is still being heard. He said on Tuesday that the Lee family is “pursuing a lawsuit against New York City,” but that they don’t want money. Instead, they want Christina’s memory to be remembered and for others to avoid a similar fate.
