MONONA, Wis. – On Monday night, a 29-year-old guy from Wisconsin was arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase while having a lot of drugs in his car.
A new statement says that a Monona Police Department officer saw a car whose registered owner had a driver’s license that had been suspended.
As stated in the news release, the police officer tried to do a traffic stop because they thought the owner was driving. But before the emergency lights came on, the driver, later named as Malcolm Whiteside, 29, of Madison, sped up to more than 100 miles per hour as he drove west on U.S. Highway 12.
When the emergency lights came on, there was a short chase before the Monona police officer stopped it because it was too dangerous near U.S. Highway 12 and Fish Hatchery Road.
Soon after, the police were told that Whiteside had turned onto Verona Road, which was miles ahead, and had crashed into a semi-trailer under the highway, damaging both cars. Whiteside is said to have left the scene of the accident.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is still looking into the hit-and-run accident. The semi-truck driver was not hurt in the accident.
The police set up a perimeter, and a K9 team and a drone team were used to find Whiteside, who was hiding in a storage shed show at a nearby home improvement store.
The news statement says that a second person who was involved in the crime turned themselves in on August 13 at 4:15 p.m.
From what the Monona Police Department says, Whiteside was drunk when he was caught. A search of Whiteside’s car turned up a lot of drugs, including 12 grams of cocaine, 25 grams of MDMA, and 75 grams of fentanyl.
At the scene, police also found a full handgun that had been changed to work as an automatic machine gun.
Whiteside was taken to the Dane County Jail on several charges. Whiteside has not been officially charged in the Wisconsin Circuit Court system as of the time this story was written.
Chief Brian Chaney of the Monona Police Department talked at length about what happened and praised his officers for how properly they handled it.
“During this incident, Mr. Whiteside could have seriously hurt or killed someone,” Chief Chaney wrote on the Monona Police Department’s social media page. “He was driving carelessly before he was pulled over, and he kept doing it after the police stopped chasing him.”
It was said by Chief Chaney that Whiteside doesn’t care, but luckily everyone at the Monona Police Department does.
“This kind of dangerous behavior will not be tolerated in Monona,” Chief Chaney said. “We’re glad that the US Government is helping to keep this community and Greater Dane County safe.” The tax money you pay at the state and city levels is working hard!”
