Standoff in Moorpark Ends with Arrest of Three Suspects

Moorpark, CA — Three individuals were arrested after a dramatic standoff with Ventura County deputies at an apartment complex on the 4700 block of South Moorpark Avenue on September 18, 2023. The incident unfolded live on social media as the suspects faced eviction from their homes.

At approximately 1 p.m., deputies arrived at the scene to address the situation involving 44-year-old Edwige Mondesir Sr., 45-year-old Maritza Miranda, and 18-year-old Edwige Mondesir Jr. The suspects initially refused to comply with law enforcement orders.

To gain entry, deputies employed a battering ram to force open the front door. Upon entering, Edwige Sr. allegedly charged at the deputies brandishing a metal object, prompting them to deploy a less-lethal projectile. He subsequently retreated into a back room of the residence.

During the altercation, Edwige Jr. was reported to have “battered a detective” before being arrested following a brief struggle. Miranda was taken into custody due to an outstanding warrant.

While barricaded, Edwige Sr. began live-streaming the standoff, making statements that indicated his refusal to cooperate with deputies. Negotiators attempted to reach him, but he repeatedly disconnected or failed to answer calls.

After several hours, SWAT team members used pepper balls to compel Edwige Sr. to exit the room, at which point he was taken into custody on a felony warrant. All three suspects have been booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility in Ventura and are awaiting future court appearances.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident, which raises concerns about public safety and the appropriate use of social media during critical situations.
