According to police, a husband shot his wife outside an elementary school in southern Kansas on Monday after dropping their two children off for class.

According to Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter, the domestic shooting took place around 9:15 a.m. local time in front of the Cessna Elementary School in Wichita. Police did not publicize the suspect’s or victim’s names.

According to Easter, witnesses reported that the woman was shot in the chest before rushing toward the school for help.

When a deputy got on the scene, the suspect aimed a gun at the victim’s head, Easter reported. After taking cover, the deputy shot the man and detained him.

“There was a small fight that took place between the deputy and the suspect, and he got him into custody,” Easter recalled. “At this point, no school shootings have occurred. There have been no reports of children being injured or in danger.

A couple grabbed a Lyft ride to school.

According to Easter, a Lyft driver dropped the couple off at the elementary school before to the incident. Officials interrogated the driver and other witnesses on the spot.

Both the perpetrator and the victims were transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment, Easter said.

The school was placed on lockdown during the incident, but Easter stated that no children, teachers, or staff were wounded.

“There were no school shootings. Unfortunately, these things can develop in places where there are schools,” Easter added. “I know for parents it can be scary but the fact of the matter is, law enforcement showed up within two minutes of the shooting coming out and it never got into the school itself.”
