Utah Woman Suspected of Murdering Estranged Husband in His Sleep, Attempted to Hide Crime

The wife of a missing Utah National Guardsman is suspected of murdering him and attempting to conceal the crime.

Matthew Johnson missing on September 23. Johnson, a member of the Utah National Guard, failed to show up for work that day, according to Gephardt Daily.

Citing a probable cause affidavit, Fox 13, Gephardt Daily, and KUTV reported the following day that Johnson’s estranged wife Jennifer Gledhill went to the Cottonwood Heights Police Department to report an incident between her and Johnson a few days previously.

Johnson’s children stopped hearing from him on September 21, and his phone went immediately to voicemail.

According to court records, Gledhill filed for divorce in July and for a protection order in August, both of which were dismissed in September when a court found that she did not prove that abuse occurred, PEOPLE reported.

According to the affidavit, on September 28, a confidential informant informed police that Gledhill acknowledged killing Johnson by shooting him in the head as he slept.

The source claimed Johnson was sleeping when he was shot.

According to the informant, Gledhill then allegedly acknowledged relocating Johnson’s body and burying it in a shallow hole before removing and destroying objects in the home, Fox 13 reported.

After obtaining search warrants, police allegedly discovered a blood-stained area on the carpet under the bed in the master bedroom, according to Gephardt Daily.

Johnson’s body has still not been discovered.

According to Salt Lake County prison records, Gledhill is still in custody and faces first-degree murder and obstruction of justice charges.

It is unclear whether Gledhill has been formally charged by authorities or has entered a plea.
