A grandmother who was accused of killing her 3-year-old granddaughter and dumping her body in a garbage can for days pleaded no contest.

Becky Vreeland, who was charged with first-degree murder in Riley Nolan’s death, pleaded guilty and faces 45 years in jail. She will have to complete 85% of her sentence before being eligible for parole, according to the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office.

By the time she is eligible for parole, she will be 99.

Vreeland has stated that her granddaughter’s death was accidental.

Nolan was discovered dead in a trash can at Vreeland’s Cleveland County residence in June 2022. While Nolan’s parents were in jail, the grandma cared for him and her other grandchildren.

Yukon is getting closer to having a Route 66 destination with food trucks, live music, and more. Vreeland told investigators that she kept toys in a garbage can in the backyard, with a ladder nearby for the kids to collect them. She claimed Nolan was attempting to accomplish this when the three-year-old fell inside.

According to authorities, blood stains were located in the home’s utility room and bathroom. The medical examiner’s report revealed that the infant had three different skull fractures, all consistent with blunt force trauma.

Vreeland claimed she never notified the police because she was afraid they would take away the other children. According to court filings, Vreeland’s ex-husband discovered Nolan in the trash three days after her death.

A no-contest plea means that Vreeland accepted punishment for the crime without admitting guilt.
