16-year-old Passenger Dies in I-840 Multi-car Accident; Parents Injured
Kyler Matthew Gatica, 16, was killed in a fatal four-vehicle incident on Interstate 840 on October 12, 2024. The accident happened between the I-24 exit and the NW Broad Street (Highway 41) exit, while the family was coming home from a trip to Florida.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the accident occurred on I-840 East as the vehicles approached traffic congestion. Breanna Bishop, 27, was driving a Nissan Juke when she rear-ended a Nissan Altima with Kyler in the passenger seat.
The collision forced the Altima into the back of a Toyota Corolla, exacerbating the chain reaction. A GMC Yukon drove onto the shoulder in an attempt to avoid the accident, but the Corolla crashed into its side.
Kyler, along with his parents, Matthew and Stephanie Gatica, was tragically killed when the Altima collided with the Juke and Corolla. His parents were injured in the crash, but both survived. Bishop, the Juke driver, was also injured. Fortunately, none of the Toyota Corolla or GMC Yukon occupants were seriously injured.
When the accident occurred, the Gatica family was on their way to Mt. Juliet. Kyler, a Mt. Juliet High School student, excelled at volleyball and basketball. Funeral services were performed on Monday to commemorate his memory.
According to authorities, no charges will be brought in connection with the event.
