Driver Killed in Single-car Crash on I-26 in Orangeburg County, S.C. Highway Patrol Reports
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one person was killed early Sunday in a crash on Interstate 26 in the Midlands.
Cpl. Nick Pye said the single-vehicle crash occurred around midnight in Orangeburg County.
According to Pye, a 2004 Chevrolet sedan was going east on I-26 when it drove off the right side of the road around mile marker 141. That’s at the Calhoun County line, near the connection with US 601.
Pye said the Chevy flipped over, and the driver died.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
Pye stated that the driver was the only one in the Chevy, and no additional injuries were reported.
There was no information on whether the driver was wearing a seat belt.
The cause of the Chevy’s deviation off the road was unknown, but the Highway Patrol is still investigating the collision.
According to the state Department of Public Safety, at least 750 people have died on South Carolina roadways in 2024 as of Oct. 13. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, 1,030 persons were killed in collisions last year.
DPS data show that at least 40 individuals died in Orangeburg County collisions in 2024. DPS reported 36 deaths in the county in 2023.
