People in Pinole are being warned by the police about a gift card scam that is spreading on social media. Before they are bought, scammers are cutting off the security codes on gift cards at local shops. This lets them use any amount of money that is on the card.
A Pinole Police Department patrol sergeant said, “They cut off the top that gives you the code that lets the person you give the card to access your money.” After taking what’s left of the card, which is no longer valuable, the thief ties it up and puts it back on the rack.
The cops used social media to warn people about this kind of crime and show them how to avoid becoming a victim. Patrol Sergeant Barry Duggan of the Pinole Police Department said, “When you buy a gift card, either feel for the whole card—it should be the same size as a credit card—or, if the store allows it, take these cards out of their folders as you’re buying them and make sure the whole card is there.” People who bought something said it’s annoying, especially around the holidays.
