A man from New Jersey named Edward Mathews was given eight years in jail after a video of him calling his Black neighbors racist names went viral. They agreed to plead guilty to four counts of bias intimidation as part of a deal that was made public in October.
He also admitted to a drug crime after plants that cause hallucinations were discovered in his home. An investigation into Mathews began in July 2021, after a neighbor said he was harassing them. The study showed that Mathews had a history of abusing his neighbors.
After the racist rant went online, the mayor of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, wants the federal government to look into it as a hate crime. On July 5, 2021, Mathews was arrested while dozens of protesters gathered around his home.
