Last SSDI Payment in 2024 and What to Know for January 2025
In December 2024, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries in the United States are waiting for their last payment of the year, which will be made on the 24th of the month. As you already know, SSDI benefits are paid in conjunction with retirement benefits on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month.
You may have noticed that December 24 is not a Wednesday, and this change requires an explanation that is, in reality, simple. This advance is because the 25th is a holiday, which makes it necessary to process payments the previous business day. This payment corresponds to those whose birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of any month.
How payments are arranged each month for SSDI disability benefits
The Social Security Administration (SSA) makes three payments to disabled workers receiving SSDI benefits.:
- The second Wednesday of each month: Payment date for beneficiaries whose birthdays are between the 1st and 10th of any month.
- The third Wednesday of each month: Payment date for beneficiaries whose birthdays are between the 11th and the 20th of any month.
- The fourth Wednesday of each month: Payment date for beneficiaries whose birthdays are between the 21st and 31st of any month.
Payments that continue in 2025 for Social Security SSDI beneficiaries
As the start of 2025 approaches, these beneficiaries should be aware of the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), which will impact their monthly income. This adjustment, announced on October 10, 2024, implies an increase of 2.5% based on inflation and economic conditions.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) determines this adjustment annually based on the CPI-W Consumer Price Index, which will benefit all SSDI recipients beginning with the first payment in January.
Looking ahead to 2025, the first payment after the adjustment will be made on January 8. This first distribution is intended for beneficiaries who have birthdays between the 1st and 10th of any month. The next group, those born between the 11th and the 20th, will see their payment on January 15, while those with birthdays between the 21st and the 31st will receive their funds on January 22.
For tax year 2024, the maximum SSDI benefit was $3,822 per month. However, this amount may have varied depending on each beneficiary’s work history and contributions throughout their career. With the new adjustment, the maximum payment is expected to be approximately $3,917, which represents an increase of $95 compared to the 2024 maximum.
How to claim a payment that did not arrive on time
If a payment is not received on the expected date, it is recommended that you consult the schedule available on the SSA website. In case the payment still does not appear in the bank account after verification, it is advisable to contact the SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213.
