At Least 9 Stores Closed in 2024: Another Closure Hits Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza

CNS –

On the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, a Casper Sleep Store is closing.

The notice that reads “We’re saying goodnight to this store” is put in the shop’s window.

On January 22nd, the location will close for good. The mattress and bedding firm only sells its wares online; there are no brick-and-mortar stores in the area. On Wednesday morning, The Star reached out to the corporation for comment, but they did not answer.

The shopping mall has seen the closure of multiple more stores in recent times. Strang Chef Collectives, Parachute, Chuy’s, Express, Forever 21, Sweet Kiss Brigadeiro, Kindred, and Soft Surroundings were among the nine businesses that shut down in 2024. Messenger Coffee Co. also had a presence there.

The purchase of the Plaza was announced in July by HP Village Partners. The firm is the proud owner of Highland Park Village, a posh retail district in Dallas.

In an interview with The Star from October, HP Village principal Ray Washburne detailed his vision for the area, which included bolstering security, adding a boutique hotel, making cosmetic updates, constructing a new office tower, and promoting locally owned and operated businesses over national corporations.

According to Washburne, “addition through subtraction” would be achieved with fewer “junk retail” locations and more restaurants and sidewalks.

An estimated $100 million will go into renovating the Plaza.

“Overall, our goal is to restore the center so that Kansas City can take pride in it once more,” Washburne stated in an interview with The Star.

While the exact start date of development is still unknown, HP Village has previously stated in interviews that the improvements will have to wait for the city to upgrade its infrastructure.
