REAL ID Made Easier: New Jersey Adds 4,500 Appointments & Mobile Services

0

If you’re planning to travel this summer and need a REAL ID, there’s good news! The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) has announced a new initiative to make obtaining a REAL ID easier with the launch of “REAL ID Thursdays.”

What is REAL ID Thursdays?

Starting Thursday, March 20, NJMVC Licensing Centers across the state will add nearly 4,500 REAL ID appointments to the online scheduling system.

Acting NJMVC Chief Administrator Latrecia Littles-Floyd stated that there has been a significant increase in demand for REAL ID, leading the commission to expand appointment availability.

Customers can begin booking REAL ID Thursday appointments on Friday, March 14, through the NJMVC appointment scheduler.

Additional Access Through Mobile Units

To further expand availability, REAL ID Mobile Unit events will be held on Saturdays, starting April 5. More appointment slots for these events will be added to the system later in March.

How to Upgrade to a REAL ID

Customers with driver’s licenses expiring within three months can renew and upgrade to a REAL ID at the same time.

Required REAL ID documents must be brought to the appointment.

Customers must request an upgrade when serviced at their scheduled time.

When Does REAL ID Go Into Effect?

Beginning May 7, 2025, you will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights within the U.S.

Do You Need a REAL ID to Fly?

A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license will be required for domestic air travel.

A valid U.S. passport is an acceptable alternative, meaning a REAL ID is not mandatory if you have a passport.

REAL ID vs. Passport: What’s the Difference?

A U.S. passport is a federally issued document and is widely accepted as proof of identity and citizenship.

The REAL ID Act sets security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards.

A passport can be used instead of a REAL ID for boarding domestic flights, entering federal buildings, and accessing certain secure facilities.
