Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated the Trump administration’s commitment to ending Russia’s war in Ukraine during an interview Wednesday on Hannity.
“We are blessed and fortunate to have a president who is looking to bring an end, if possible, to a conflict that has cost billions of dollars, hundreds of thousands of lives, and caused destruction that will take a generation for Ukrainians to recover from,” Rubio said.
Tensions Between the U.S. and Ukraine
Relations between the United States and Ukraine have been strained following a heated exchange last week in the Oval Office between Presidents Donald Trump, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Vice President JD Vance. The diplomatic spat led to the collapse of a rare earth minerals deal that was expected to establish a long-term economic partnership between the two nations and offset some of the tens of billions in U.S. aid provided to Ukraine.
As a result, the Trump administration has increased pressure on Ukraine, temporarily freezing all military aid and suspending intelligence-sharing operations—moves that could hinder Kyiv’s ability to defend itself and target Russian forces. It remains unclear how long these suspensions will last.
Zelenskyy Reaches Out After White House Dispute
Amid the tensions, Trump acknowledged receiving a letter from Zelenskyy during his Tuesday address to a joint session of Congress.
“My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts,” Zelenskyy wrote. “We truly value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence.”
Zelenskyy also signaled his willingness to move forward with the stalled mineral rights agreement at any time.
Rubio Stresses Continued Diplomatic Efforts
Speaking with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Rubio emphasized that the White House remains committed to diplomacy, working with both Russia and Ukraine to understand their demands and find a path toward peace.
