Colder Temps Forecasted for Detroit This Week, Says National Weather Service
Detroit, MI – After a brief warm spell reaching into the 80s, Detroit’s weather is expected to cool down significantly for the remainder of the week, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will hover in the high 60s, signaling a return to more typical September weather for the Motor City.
The warmest day this week was Wednesday, with highs reaching about 83 degrees alongside breezy conditions. However, forecasters warn that cooler, unsettled weather is incoming, accompanied by showers, thunderstorms, and a notable drop in temperature for the following days.
Cold Front and Rain Showers Bring Cooler Weather
The weather shift stems from a low-pressure system moving through the region, bringing with it a cold front that will deliver showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly on Wednesday afternoon and evening. Most rainfall is expected between 5 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. Thursday.
“A low-pressure system is bringing a cold front through this afternoon and evening, which will bring a period of showers and thunderstorms,” said David Kook, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s White Lake Township office. “We’re looking for generally around a half to three-quarters of an inch of precipitation, so we’re not overly concerned about heavy rainfall potential from this cold front.”
Temperatures to Remain Below Average Through the Weekend
Following the storm system, Detroit will experience a noticeable cooling trend with highs in the high 60s and lows dipping into the 40s overnight. Thursday is expected to be particularly cooler, with a high near 68 degrees, as cooler air flows down from Canada behind the cold front.
“The weather will be a little bit quieter on Thursday,” Kook added. “It will be cooler, though, with air coming down from Canada behind the cold front.”
Friday may bring a slight warm-up, with a high near 73 degrees, yet the weekend temperatures will settle back into below-normal ranges:
- Thursday: Showers early; high 68, low 52
- Friday: Partly sunny; high 73, low 49
- Saturday: Mostly sunny; high 67, low 48
- Sunday: Sunny; high 68, low 48
Upcoming Weather Systems and Wind Concerns
Looking ahead, another system approaching northern Michigan could trigger additional showers and thunderstorms later next week, possibly accompanied by strong winds with gusts between 25 to 30 mph.
“The next system we’ll be looking at coming through northern Michigan will bring another chance for showers and thunderstorms,” Kook explained. “More notably, it could bring some winds with gusts of 25-30 mph.”
