DEA Announces 617 Arrests and Major Drug Seizures in Week-Long Surge Targeting Sinaloa Cartel
Washington, D.C. – The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has announced the results of an intense week-long operation targeting the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, responsible for trafficking lethal drugs including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin into the United States. This surge, conducted from August 25 through August 29, led to a significant crackdown on the cartel’s extensive network.
The operation saw coordinated efforts by DEA agents across 23 domestic field divisions and seven international regions, culminating in the arrest of 617 individuals and the seizure of massive quantities of illicit substances and assets.
A Powerful Blow to the Sinaloa Cartel’s Operations
During the five-day operation, authorities confiscated staggering amounts of narcotics and resources fueling the cartel’s illegal trade:
- 480 kilograms of fentanyl powder
- 714,707 counterfeit pills
- 2,209 kilograms of methamphetamine
- 7,469 kilograms of cocaine
- 55 kilograms of heroin
- $11.1 million in currency seized
- $1.6 million in assets confiscated
- 420 firearms taken off the streets
This coordinated enforcement effort demonstrates the DEA’s unwavering commitment to reducing the impact of dangerous drugs entering American communities. DEA Administrator Terrance Cole emphasized the life-saving importance of such actions, stating:
“Every kilogram of poison seized, every dollar stripped from the cartels, and every arrest we make represents lives saved and communities defended. DEA will not relent until the Sinaloa Cartel is dismantled from top to bottom.”
The Sinaloa Cartel: A Global Threat
The DEA has described the Sinaloa Cartel as one of the most significant threats to public safety, health, and national security. With tens of thousands of members, associates, and facilitators spread across at least 40 countries, the cartel orchestrates the production, manufacturing, distribution, and trafficking of synthetic drugs globally.
In February, the Trump Administration officially designated the cartel alongside seven other groups as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, reinforcing the gravity of the threat it poses.

Collaboration and the Way Forward
This recent surge was the result of combining enforcement, intelligence, and international cooperation in a strategic campaign to undermine the cartel’s command and control mechanisms.
The DEA highlighted that this operation forms part of a larger whole-of-government approach to address the fentanyl crisis and bolster protections for families and communities throughout the U.S.
Efforts will continue in partnership with the Homeland Security Task Force and other federal partners to counter the influence of designated terrorist organizations and transnational organized crime.
