Philadelphia, PA – A tragic incident unfolded outside a 7-Eleven convenience store in Philadelphia when a woman was fatally shot with her own firearm after intervening in a threatening altercation involving a man wielding a screwdriver. The dramatic confrontation, captured on surveillance video, highlights the dangers faced by bystanders attempting to help during violent disputes.

Lauren Jardine, 33, was attempting to assist a woman who was being threatened by John Kelly, 45, around 5:45 p.m. Friday near 12th and Chestnut Streets in Center City, according to local prosecutors and law enforcement officials. What began as a verbal dispute escalated quickly, leading to Jardine’s death and an ongoing murder investigation.

The Harrowing Incident Outside 7-Eleven

Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney Jeff Hojnowski detailed the incident, stating Jardine was walking by when she noticed Kelly arguing with his girlfriend while holding a screwdriver. Seeking to help, Jardine intervened, which lead to a verbal confrontation that escalated when she allegedly drew her illegally carried gun.

Authorities say a struggle ensued over the firearm. Surveillance footage obtained by The Philadelphia Inquirer and ABC affiliate WPVI shows Kelly wrestling the gun away from Jardine and firing multiple shots, including two while Jardine was on the ground. One of these shots occurred as she tried to grab Kelly’s screwdriver.

“At some point, he is able to disarm her from the firearm. He gets up, and he is kind of standing up to her right-hand side, as she is attempting to get up, you hear another shot… and she falls to the ground,” said Hojnowski.

Kelly reportedly placed the firearm in a mailbox after the shooting.

Lauren Jardine’s Life and Intentions

Jardine’s mother, Ada Jardine, shared that her daughter was simply trying to protect another woman from harm. “She was helping someone. She was probably trying to tell him to leave her alone,” Ada Jardine said.

Detectives discovered job applications in Jardine’s bag, indicating she was attending a job fair and working towards obtaining a commercial driver’s license, forklift operation certificates, and HVAC repair qualifications.

Perpetrator’s Background and Legal Status

John Kelly has a history of encounters with law enforcement, including recent charges from April for criminal trespass, making terroristic threats, and harassment. Multiple 7-Eleven employees have reported Kelly for harassment and theft. Kelly allegedly threatened a store manager by saying, “I know where you live” and identifying their train station.

Kelly pleaded guilty to the prior charges in May and was sentenced to nine months of probation. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on September 22 for the current murder charge.
