NYPD Arrests Bronx Predator Who Allegedly Raped Teen on Park Bench Amid Rising Rape Rates

0

Bronx, NY – In a swift and determined response to a shocking sexual assault, New York law enforcement officials apprehended Xavier Chapman, 30, the suspect accused of raping a 19-year-old woman in Belmont earlier this week. This arrest underscores concerns as rape incidents have notably increased across the Bronx and New York City.

How the Disturbing Attack Unfolded

At approximately 3 a.m. on Wednesday, a terrified 19-year-old victim was sitting alone on a park bench at Park Avenue and East 183rd Street when Chapman allegedly approached her with his private parts exposed. According to police sources, he then forcibly pinned the victim down and sexually assaulted her. The attacker fled only after the victim screamed and struggled to push him away.

Investigation Led by Critical Video Evidence

The day after the assault, the NYPD released surveillance footage of the suspect, dressed in all black with his hood pulled up, walking nearby. This footage was crucial in the investigation. Members of the NYPD’s Warrants Section conducted an “extensive video canvas” that successfully allowed them to track down Chapman, leading to his arrest on Friday.

Charges and Criminal History

Following his apprehension, Chapman was charged with rape, sexual abuse, and harassment. His prior record shows a disturbing pattern of lewd behavior. In April, he was arrested for a public lewdness incident, involving exposing himself and pleasuring himself at a Bronx man’s apartment door. He pleaded not guilty and the case was adjourned in contemplation of dismissal in July.

Recent Related Incidents Fuel Community Concern

This latest incident occurred just a day after another brutal attack in The Bronx, where Nicholas Dejesus, 42, allegedly punched and raped a 33-year-old woman on Broadway near West 230th Street in Kingsbridge. Dejesus, on parole for robbery at the time, was arrested shortly after and faces multiple charges including rape and assault.

Surge in Rape Statistics Reflects Growing Challenge

Rape cases have surged alarmingly across The Bronx, rising by 27.5% this year with 380 reported attacks compared to 298 in the same period last year. Citywide, the numbers reflect a similar troubling trend, with 1,484 rapes reported across all five boroughs in 2025, marking about a 21% increase from 1,182 in 2024.

  • The NYPD attributes part of this rise to recent legislative changes that broaden the legal definition of rape.
  • These changes now include additional forms of sexual assault, helping more victims seek justice.
  • The increase has prompted calls for heightened vigilance and enhanced community safety measures.

“The extensive use of surveillance footage shows the NYPD’s commitment to swiftly addressing these crimes and bringing perpetrators to justice,” said a law enforcement source familiar with the case.
