Michigan Church Shooting Victims Remembered: Navy Veteran Among Four Killed in Grand Blanc Tragedy

Grand Blanc, Michigan — A Michigan church community is reeling after a gunman opened fire during Sunday services at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, killing four people and injuring several others. The shocking attack on Sept. 28, 2025, turned what should have been a peaceful morning of worship into a scene of chaos, fire, and loss.

Authorities say the gunman also set fire to the church, trapping some inside as congregants rushed to safety. Families scrambled to reunite with loved ones at a nearby cinema that served as a reunification site.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ordered flags to fly at half-staff statewide to honor the victims, calling the attack “a heartbreaking tragedy.”

Navy Veteran John Bond Among Victims

One of the victims identified was John Bond, 77, a U.S. Navy veteran, beloved husband, father, and grandfather. His family confirmed his death through a verified GoFundMe fundraiser set up to help cover memorial expenses and support his widow, Joanne.

Bond served nine years in the Navy and was remembered as a man devoted to both his faith and his family. His loved ones described him as “a lover of golf and trains” who most cherished time with his grandchildren.

“He was a well-known and loved member of his family and active in his community,” the family wrote. “He always loved spending time with his family and grandkids.”

How the Attack Unfolded

According to Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye, the gunman entered the church during morning services, firing shots into the congregation before igniting a blaze inside the building.

Authorities confirmed that two victims were killed by gunfire, while at least two others perished in the flames after becoming trapped.

Dr. Michael Danic, medical chief of staff at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital, said his team treated eight victims ranging in age from 6 to 78.

• Five people were treated for gunshot wounds. One victim died in the emergency department, and another remains in critical condition.
• A child injured in the shooting was stabilized and later transferred to another facility.
• Three victims were treated for smoke inhalation; two have since been discharged, while one remains intubated.

Families and Church Members in Mourning

The tragedy has left the close-knit Grand Blanc congregation shaken. Many families rushed to the nearby NCG Trillium Cinema, which was designated as the reunification site.

Stephanie Giddings, a local resident from Fenton, said she left work early to be with her church community. Her daughter was baptized at the chapel earlier this year.

“They’re family,” Giddings told. “I’m in complete disbelief, and my heart just breaks.”

A church spokesman, Doug Andersen, released a statement calling the attack an assault on sacred space.

“Places of worship are meant to be sanctuaries of peacemaking, prayer and connection. We pray for peace and healing for all involved.”

Investigation Continues

Authorities have not yet released the names of the other three victims pending family notification. The suspect’s identity has also not been publicly disclosed, and officials have not shared details on a possible motive.

The FBI and Michigan State Police are assisting Grand Blanc Township Police with the investigation. Officials are expected to hold further briefings this week as they piece together how the tragedy unfolded.
