State Of Ohio Ranked Among the Top Five For ‘Conversion Treatment,’ According to Report!
CheapNailsalonsnearme–In a revealing and comprehensive study, Ohio has been identified as one of the top five states in the United States for the practice of “conversion therapy.” This controversial and widely discredited method aims to alter the sexual orientation or gender identity of individuals, particularly those in the LGBTQ+ community.
This article delves into the critical findings of the study and discusses the implications of these practices. The study, conducted by The Trevor Project, a national organization focused on preventing suicide among LGBTQ+ youth, places Ohio alongside Texas, Minnesota, Missouri, and Pennsylvania for having the highest number of “conversion therapy” practitioners.
These include both licensed and unlicensed individuals. Remarkably, more than 1,300 practitioners are estimated to be operating in 48 states and Washington D.C., with Ohio reporting at least 72 active practitioners. Conversion therapy, often underpinned by religious beliefs, is an attempt to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
However, it lacks support from the broader medical community. Major medical associations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, strongly oppose these practices due to their unscientific basis and harmful consequences.
Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics highlights the severe repercussions of “conversion therapy.” The practice is not only ineffective but also detrimental, with an estimated economic burden of $9.23 billion.
It’s associated with severe mental and physical health issues, such as depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. A significant portion of practitioners in Ohio and other states hold ministerial or religious positions. Predominantly Christian, these practitioners operate in various settings, from specialized religious organizations to broader ministries treating LGBTQ+ identities as mental or spiritual ailments.
Despite the alarming findings, “conversion therapy” remains legal on a statewide level in Ohio. Some cities have taken the initiative to ban the practice, and there have been legislative efforts, such as House Bill 220, to prohibit licensed health professionals from engaging in conversion therapy with minors. This bill, however, is still pending review.
The study urges policymakers, including state legislators, licensing boards, and accreditation agencies, to act urgently to curtail these harmful practices. The goal is to foster a future free from sexual orientation and gender identity change efforts.
Conclusion
The findings of The Trevor Project’s study put a spotlight on the ongoing issue of “conversion therapy” in states like Ohio. With its significant economic and health impacts, and the moral implications surrounding the practice, it’s a call to action for legislators and the medical community to address and halt these harmful practices. As society moves towards greater acceptance and understanding of LGBTQ+ identities, the discontinuation of conversion therapy practices becomes a crucial step in that journey.
