On January 23, a lone wolf from the Yowlumni Pack, identified in the summer of 2023, stood before the camera.
With a poised stance, the wolf tilted its head back and released a haunting howl, a sound that echoed through the forest and symbolized the return of wolves to Southern California after a 150-year absence. The Yowlumni Pack, named after the Yowlumni band of the Tule River Yokuts, signifies not just the return of a species but a reconnection with the region’s natural heritage.
This pack, one of four discovered in California last year, represents a growing acknowledgment of the gray wolf’s role in the state’s ecosystem. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), which captured the footage in Sequoia National Forest, highlighted the rarity of such an event.
