Why does the process of applying for food assistance in Texas take so long?
Family members waiting up to six months for their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to be approved have shared their program experiences.
This is because the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is experiencing a shortage of workers, as stated by the commission. Additionally, it has been noticed that the majority of the applications that are now waiting to be processed are those that are applying for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in addition to other welfare programs, such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Medicare.
It was mentioned that these types of requests involve a different process, and the Commission did not have sufficient qualified staff to manage them. However, it also confirmed that steps are being taken to expedite the processing of applications and minimize delays.
One of the initiatives announced by the HHSC includes the recruitment of new staff, salary adjustments to address high turnover rates, and the reallocation of employees to handle pending applications.
