IRS Grants Taxpayers in Disaster-Hit San Diego County Two-Month Filing Extension

0

This year’s severe winter storms in California have prompted the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to once again extend its deadlines for tax return filing and tax payments, but exclusively for taxpayers residing in San Diego County.

The IRS announced on Tuesday that individuals in areas covered by the storm-related disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) would now have until June 17 to file their 2023 tax returns and settle any outstanding tax liabilities.

Currently, this declaration applies solely to residents and businesses in San Diego County.

It is important to note that most taxpayers have excess taxes withheld from their paychecks annually, resulting in refunds from the IRS.

Personal finance advisors recommend filing tax returns promptly to expedite the receipt of refunds, regardless of the deadline.

Disaster declarations are initiated by the state’s governor in response to a formal request, which must include an initial assessment of the damage extent and its impact on the public.

In light of severe storms and flooding occurring from January 21 through 23, Governor Gavin Newsom successfully petitioned for a disaster declaration for San Diego County.

This year’s severe winter storms in California have prompted the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to once again extend its deadlines for tax return filing and tax payments, but exclusively for taxpayers residing in San Diego County.

As per the IRS, the extended deadline of June 17 will now be enforced in San Diego County for the following:

  • Individual income tax returns and payments typically due on April 15, 2024, alongside 2024 estimated tax payments due on the same day.
  • Contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts for the tax year 2023.
  • Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns usually due on January 31 and April 30, 2024.
  • Calendar-year partnership and S corporation returns typically due on March 15, 2024.
  • Calendar-year corporation and fiduciary returns and payments usually due on April 15, 2024.
  • Calendar-year tax-exempt organization returns typically due on May 15, 2024.

Nevertheless, the extended deadline is not applicable to requests for extensions beyond June 17 to file as well as pay 2023 taxes, as this deadline remains April 15.

The IRS further indicates that these revised deadlines will automatically apply to taxpayers with an address of record in San Diego County, as well as any additional counties included in the disaster declaration in the future.

The IRS recommends individuals who receive a late filing notice they deem unwarranted—for instance, those who resided in an impacted county during the storms but subsequently changed addresses, or individuals who encountered difficulties accessing crucial records stored in an affected county—to contact the IRS at (866) 562-5227.
