The guy who tried to do an illegal BASE jump in the Grand Canyon in Arizona died Friday, officials said.

The National Park Service said that around 7:30 a.m. local time on Thursday, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center got a report of a tourist who had tried to base jump from Yavapai Point on the south rim of the Grand Canyon.

“Park rangers responded and located the body of a deceased male approximately 500 feet below the rim, along with a deployed parachute,” a statement from NPS said.

The BASE jumper’s body was found early Friday morning. The victim was flown to the rim by helicopter and then taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office, which is also investigating the event with NPS.

The victim’s name is being kept secret until they can be positively identified, NPS said. There was no more information given out.

BASE stands for “building,” “antenna,” “span,” and “earth.” People do the sport for fun by jumping off of something stable and using a parachute to land on the ground.

National Park Service (NPS) said the “high-risk activity” is not allowed in any part of Grand Canyon National Park.

The man’s death came a day after another man, 20, accidentally fell 400 feet to his death from a Grand Canyon view, officials said.
