CheapNailsalonsnearmeThe Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) has formulated a comprehensive corrective action plan (CAP) to tackle the significant backlog in processing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) applications. This response comes in the wake of a warning issued by the U.S.

Department of Agriculture, highlighting the urgent need for remedial action. The backlog is primarily attributed to staffing shortages and training delays, particularly with new hires being oriented towards Medicaid re-determinations instead of SNAP.

To address these challenges, DHS plans to reassign experienced staff to focus on initial SNAP applications once the Medicaid renewal backlog diminishes. Additionally, new staff will receive prioritized training in SNAP processing.

DHS aims to enhance processing efficiency by 5-6% and has allocated $54 million for additional contracted caseworkers to expedite Medicaid renewals. This strategic reallocation of resources and focus on training is expected to significantly reduce the application backlog.
