An 8-year-old boy is being called a hero after he hid his sister from a dangerous dog.
Nicholas Chitwood, 8, and his sister Lillian, 6, were playing at their grandparents’ house when they were attacked on June 30. On Tuesday, July 2, Rebecca Chitwood, Nicholas’s mother, told WNEM that was the case.
She said, “When I got the call, I dropped everything I was doing and sped all the way to the hospital.” This was after she found out that her neighbor’s pit bull had gotten out of the yard and supposedly attacked her daughter.
There aren’t many facts about what happened that Chitwood used in the drive.
“That could mean anything to me.” “It could have been a couple of puncture wounds, what she’s feeling now, or even worse,” she said about how she first felt when she got the call.
Lily is steady and has started to get better, but Chitwood told her that her daughter still has a long way to go.
She said, “There was a cut on her neck that was about three centimeters from cutting the artery.” “And she got another bite all the way down her face.”
Lillian might have a lot of nerve damage now, but she and her family are thankful she’s still alive.
She told WNEM, “It was hard, but I’m glad my brother helped me. If he hadn’t, I would be dead by now.”
Nicholas told WNEM, “I didn’t want her to die.”
She told her son he was “the best big brother in the world” and that she was “very proud” of him.
Chris Wood also told Fox News Digital how Nicholas helped save Lillian’s life.
“He jumped on the dog and pulled it off her and continued to kick it until her grandpa came to help,” she said about her son. His only goal was to keep his sister safe. “He jumped into action when he heard her scream.”
“The dog was NOT provoked” before biting Lillian, according to a GoFundMe page that Chitwood set up to help pay for Lillian’s medical bills.
“We were taken to the University of Michigan for major surgery.” He wrote, “I found out that the owners don’t have renters insurance and won’t help with anything.”
“My daughter will have a long road ahead of her, with many trips to the University of Michigan, which is several hours away.” This will mean I have to miss work and pay a lot of medical bills for a long time. Plus, my baby girl will be traumatized by this experience and have to deal with it mentally!”
A story from WNEM said that animal control killed the dog that attacked.
