CheapNailsalonsnearmeThe assassination of Saleh al-Arouri, a senior Hamas official, in Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh, has significant implications for regional tensions and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups. Al-Arouri, 57, was the deputy chief of Hamas’s political bureau and one of the founders of the group’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades.

He had lived in exile in Lebanon following a 15-year imprisonment in Israel and had recently become a spokesperson for Hamas. On January 2, 2024, al-Arouri was killed in an Israeli drone strike that targeted a Hamas office, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals. This strike was described by Hamas as a “treacherous Zionist strike” and a “cowardly assassination.”

Alongside al-Arouri, other Hamas leaders, including Samir Findi Abu Amer and Azzam Al-Aqraa Abu Ammar of the Qassam Brigades, were also killed. Hamas has condemned this act, stating it would not deter their ongoing resistance in Gaza, and has criticized it as a failure on Israel’s part to achieve its goals in the region.

The group’s top leader, Ismail Haniyeh, denounced the attack as a terrorist act and a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty. In contrast, Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Israeli figures such as Danny Danon, a former envoy to the United Nations, praised the operation, attributing it to various Israeli security forces.

The incident has raised alarms in Lebanon, with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemning it as a new Israeli crime and an attempt to draw Lebanon into the conflict. The attack has been perceived as a dangerous escalation, particularly since it occurred in a region controlled by Hezbollah, a key ally of Hamas.

This has led to concerns about a potential widening of the conflict and increased hostilities. Iran, a supporter of both Hamas and Hezbollah, has also reacted strongly, suggesting that al-Arouri’s death would fuel further resistance against Israel.
