SUN Bucks are the outcome of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, which was passed by Congress in December 2022. This program is expected to significantly improve the lives of many youngsters who rely on school meals as their primary source of nourishment.
How SUN Bucks Work
The SUN Bucks initiative will provide $120 for each child, which equates to $40 per month during the three-month summer holiday when schools are generally closed. This financial assistance is intended to reduce food poverty and ensure that children have consistent access to nutritious meals over the summer break.
Eligibility and Enrollment
Children who meet any of the following conditions will be immediately enrolled in the SUN Bucks program:
Eligible for free or reduced-price school meals using a school meal application.
Filled out an alternative income form.
Enroll in CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal
This automatic registration guarantees that the most vulnerable children receive the necessary support without any additional barriers.
How are checks distributed to CalFresh recipients?
These benefits are provided via an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card, which acts similarly to a debit card and may be used at participating grocery stores and farmers’ markets.
The recipient’s case number’s last digit determines the day on which benefits are put into the EBT card. Distribution occurs throughout the first ten days of each month. For example, if a recipient’s case number ends with ‘1,’ they will receive their benefits on the first of the month.
Here’s a quick overview of the delivery schedule:
Case number ends in ‘1’ – Benefits are loaded on the first
Case number ends with ‘2’ – Benefits loaded on the second
Case number ends in ‘3’ – Benefits are loaded on the third
And so on till the tenth day of the month.
