California Man Convicted of Murder, Torture, and Kidnapping in 2021 Christmas Eve Death of Girlfriend
In a terrifying case in California, a 24-year-old man named S. Nava faces a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted in connection with the death of his 24-year-old girlfriend, A. Escobar, on Christmas Eve 2021. The conviction came after a jury deliberated for only one day, emphasizing the strong evidence against Nava.
Nava was convicted of nine felony counts, including first-degree murder, torture, kidnapping, aggravated mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon, possessing child pornography, and inflicting corporal injury on a cohabitant. These charges stem from a pattern of abusive and controlling behavior that resulted in a heinous crime against Escobar during what should have been a happy season.
Senior Deputy District Attorney D. Russell, who prosecuted the case, expressed hope that the conviction would bring some closure to the victim’s family: “Although this result cannot erase the immeasurable pain the defendant inflicted on the victims and their families, we hope that it brings some measure of closure to see him held accountable for his horrific crimes.”
The series of events that led to Escobar’s death began when Nava dialed 911 from their studio apartment, seeking medical attention for his girlfriend after days of continuous assault. When deputies arrived, they saw a horrifying scene: Escobar was found dead with numerous injuries, including markings all over her body, a major cut on her skull, and derogatory remarks tattooed on her chest.
Investigators discovered various murder-related materials in the flat, including tattoo equipment, baseball bats, a hammer, and a screwdriver. Furthermore, videos on Nava’s cell phone, taken hours before Escobar’s murder, showed him insulting her and showing callous indifference for her pain.
During the trial, Nava testified for himself. He admitted to injuring Escobar but denied intending to kill her. According to accounts, Nava defended his actions by saying he thought Escobar was unfaithful and wanted her to “feel the pain I felt.” His terrifying justification in court was: “The more you hurt, the less likely you are to repeat the action.”
The probe also revealed Nava’s history of abusive behavior toward past spouses. One ex-girlfriend claimed that her relationship with Nava included serious physical and emotional abuse, such as being locked to a closet and assaulted. This pattern of abuse halted only when Nava began dating Escobar.
Although jurors rejected the special circumstance accusation of murder including torture, which would have resulted in a life sentence without parole, Nava still faces a maximum of life in prison when he returns for sentencing on December 4, 2024.
