Charleston Police Arrest a Man Who They Say Tried to Attack Someone at a Gym
HIGH POINT, S.C. – A guy has been arrested by the Charleston Police Department in connection with an attempt to sexually assault someone at a gym in West Ashley.
Jail records show that 25-year-old Richard Isiah Whitney is charged with assault with the third-degree intent to commit criminal sexual behavior.
Around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, police were called to Planet Fitness at 2070 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. because a gym member said they were being followed into a private area and a man tried to sexually assault them, according to Sgt. Chris Stinson, a spokeswoman for the police.
The victim could get away from the suspect and call the cops.
Whitney was recognized as the suspect by police, and he was arrested on Saturday.
Whitney went to the Al Cannon Detention Center and was booked. She was later freed on a $5,000 bond.
Police said the investigation is still ongoing and that anyone with information should call the Charleston Police Department at 843-720-2422 and ask to speak with the Central Detective who is on duty.
Planet Fitness has not yet replied to a request for comment about an earlier complaint about Whitney that was included in the police report.
