Claims of partisan manipulation surround Georgia Republicans’ redistricting maps, which have caused a lot of debate.

Some people who don’t like the new maps that Republicans in the state senate made say they will probably end up back in court because they don’t make it more likely for lawmakers of color to be elected.

A long line of people who don’t like the new Republican district maps told politicians that they still don’t follow the Federal Voting Rights Act, which is why they had to be changed in the first place.

“This plan doesn’t do what it needs to do, and it doesn’t give Black voters more representation,” Aunna Dennis of Common Cause Georgia told the Senate reapportionment committee during a meeting.

The new maps do make some senate districts with majorities of black people, but the head of the Republican group said that the people who made the maps also thought about politics.

As much as possible, we also tried to keep the same number of representatives, which meant taking politics into account, so that the senate plan stayed balanced between parties like it was in 2021, state Sen. Shelly Echols (R-Gainesville) told the committee she chairs that was redistricting.

“They didn’t follow the court order,” GALEO Impact Fund’s David Garcia said before the hearing in the hallway.

He was one of the people who said Republicans messed up the plans. Two more districts with a majority of black people were added, but African American Democratic state Sen. Donzella James (D-Atlanta) said the new plan would force her out of her district with a majority of black people.

“It looks like it’s all smoke and mirrors and partisan games,” Sen. James told the committee.

Democrats have also made plans, which they will show off on Thursday. But the Republican majority will decide what changes to make, if any, before the end of this special session of the legislature in early December.
