GREEN BAY, Wis. – This year’s primary election will take place in August, and Governor Tony Evers joined other state and local Democratic leaders in urging voters to reject two constitutional amendments on the ballot.
This power, which the governor has held for decades, would be taken away from him if the two amendments were approved. They would give the state assembly the sole obligation of allocating federal cash without any defined qualifications.
In a statement, Governor Evers stated, “The bottom line here is that this is a takeover by the Republican party. The Republicans in the legislature have decided that they want to have the ability to take these things over.” Republicans contend that the changes are essential to keep an eye on the unrestrained power that the governor possesses.
Because the money would have to be provided through legislation, Democrats claim that this will make it more difficult for the state to respond promptly to emergencies or incidents of natural disasters.
