Denver Doctor Sentenced to 158 Years for Drugging and Raping Six Women He Met on Dating Apps
A Denver doctor was sentenced to 158 years in prison for drugging and raping six Colorado women he met through dating apps.
The sentencing judge chastised 36-year-old “narcissistic monster” and former doctor Stephen Matthews on Friday for enticing ten women to his West Denver townhouse, mixing their drinks, and raping eight of them between 2019 and 2023, according to CBS News.
“Evidence in this case is overwhelming,” Judge Eric Johnson stated, addressing the guilty creep directly. “You have diminished this world.”
Matthews’ victims and relatives applauded the longer-than-life sentence, as over two dozen people, including survivors of his terrible crimes, read tearful victim-impact comments. “We are now a powerful army of survivors — and you are nothing,” one of his victims stated, describing the former physician as a “narcissistic monster” and a “serial rapist.”
In August, a jury convicted Matthews of raping the women, whom he met on dating apps like Hinge and Tinder, CBS reported.
Many of Matthews’ victims claimed they could only recall fragments of what happened after drinking with the evil doctor, while others claimed they awoke naked in bed with him.
The ladies told the court that the accused would then “gaslight” them into believing that whatever happened was their fault, such as stating they drank too much or couldn’t handle their liquor, according to the station.
They also discussed how his misdeeds had left them with anxiety, despair, paranoia, and other concerns. “You drugged me, raped me, and manipulated me into thinking it was my fault,” one of his victims claimed.
The mother of one of the victims said, “What you did is despicable — you have imposed a life sentence on these women and their families.”
Matthews did not speak at his sentence, despite allegations from multiple victims that he had no remorse for his conduct.
Matthews’ lawyer, Douglas Cohen, said he remained silent because he intends to challenge the judge’s decision.
Matthews’ parents implored the court to be lenient with their son, whom they described as a narcissistic alcoholic who can be cured. “I love you always and no matter what,” Matthews’ mother stated, asking the judge not to “throw away the key.”
CBS reported that Prosecutor Victoria Kelley was significantly less sympathetic, saying she’s certain there are “dozens or more” victims. The judge reiterated this, telling the victims, “You were believed—the verdict said that.”
Denver District Attorney Beth McCann later described Matthews’ crimes as abhorrent, saying she hoped the sentence “provides a measure of comfort to all of Mr. Matthews’ victims, whose courage in coming forward resulted in this successful outcome.”
