Las Vegas — A former professional football player was sentenced to jail on Tuesday for the April 2019 killing of his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter at his Las Vegas condominium.

Cierre Wood, a former NFL and Canadian Football League running back pled guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse in April, according to court records, and was sentenced today.

Wood, 33, was sentenced to life in prison with the prospect of parole after 10 years on the murder charge. Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth also ordered him to serve a sentence of 28 months to six years for child abuse. He must serve his sentences concurrently.

According to a document of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped the remaining felony counts of child abuse that they had originally filed against Wood. He took an Alford plea, which is a formal acknowledgment of guilt in criminal court that allows the defendant to maintain their innocence.

On Tuesday, the Associated Press sent an email to his lawyer asking response.

Wood attended the University of Notre Dame before making brief NFL appearances with three clubs and the Montreal Alouettes in Canada.

According to court records, the kid’s mother, Amy Taylor, 31, pled guilty earlier this year to second-degree murder and felony child abuse as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

According to the coroner’s office in Las Vegas, the kid, La’Rayah Davis, died from blunt force injuries on April 9, 2019.
