Exclusive: Marijuana Rescheduling Could Boost Biden’s Double-Digit Political Support, New Poll Reveals!
CNS News– The political landscape surrounding cannabis reform in the United States could potentially benefit President Joe Biden, as indicated by a recent survey. The poll suggests that rescheduling marijuana under federal law, a move initiated by Biden might significantly boost his political support, particularly among young voters.
This development reflects a growing trend in public opinion favoring more progressive marijuana policies. The survey, conducted by Lake Research Partners and commissioned by the Coalition for Cannabis Scheduling Reform, reveals that 58% of likely voters are in favor of moving marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act.
This change would represent a major shift in federal drug policy, categorizing cannabis alongside less restricted substances and recognizing its potential medical uses. Interestingly, only 19% of respondents opposed this shift, highlighting the broad support for cannabis reform.
“Support for loosening weed restrictions cuts across all demographic groups and political affiliations, but was highest among 18- to 25-year olds: 65 percent supported the administration’s moves and just 14 percent opposed.”

Crucially, the survey found that Biden’s favorability rating could increase by 11 points upon the successful rescheduling of marijuana. This jump in approval is particularly notable among young voters aged 18-25, a demographic critical for Biden’s re-election bid.
The data suggests that these voters are not only aware of the rescheduling debate but also positively associate Biden with this progressive change. While the president does not have direct control over the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) final decision on rescheduling, his administration’s stance on cannabis reform has been influential.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommended this action, and the DEA holds the final authority. Biden’s public opposition to marijuana’s current Schedule I classification, which places it alongside drugs like heroin, has been a significant aspect of his administration’s drug policy.
The survey also explored the nuances of public perception and political strategy. For instance, respondents were presented with arguments both for and against the rescheduling. Surprisingly, even when faced with negative characterizations of the reform, a majority still supported it. This indicates a strong and resilient public backing for cannabis reform, irrespective of political framing.

Moreover, respondents were informed about the potential economic and social benefits of rescheduling, such as significant tax revenue and criminal justice reforms. While some of these benefits might be overstated or misunderstood, the general sentiment toward marijuana reform remains overwhelmingly positive.
The survey’s findings are particularly relevant as the 2024 presidential election approaches. With marijuana reform becoming an increasingly important issue for many voters, Biden’s stance on this matter could play a pivotal role in shaping the electoral landscape. As public opinion continues to evolve, it becomes clear that political leaders who align with the momentum toward cannabis reform may find themselves at an advantage.
