Family of Missing Paddleboarder Appeals for Navigation Company to Release Location Data

A “professional diver and spearfisher” named Luciano Mercenari went missing this week while paddleboarding off the coast of Key Biscayne, Florida. His family has asked a guidance company for help.

Allegra Jacchia, Mercenari’s cousin, said in a social media post that the man was wearing a GPS-enabled Garmin diving watch when he went missing. She wants the company to share the location data.

There were a lot of shares of Jacchia’s post with the phrase “#FindLuc,” and she tagged Garmin in the hopes that the company would do more to help find Mercenary.

“He was wearing a watch from the brand Garmin, a diving watch,” said Jacchia. “We contacted the brand, who told us that since the watch had not been synced to the phone since March, there is no way to track his location.”

“We asked for more information; we are begging them to help us find a way.”

Jacchia says that Garmin is sending a team with sound devices to find Mercenari on Thursday after a public pressure campaign. Garmin hasn’t said anything about this yet.

Garmin said in a statement to Fox News Digital, “We know this must be very upsetting for Luciano Mercenari’s family and friends.”

“Garmin has been in touch with Key Biscayne police since early Tuesday morning, and they have also answered family members’ emails.” There will be no changes to the things we are doing to help find Luciano.

The last time Mercenari was seen on video leaving his home was just after 5 p.m. Monday, according to the Key Biscayne Police Department. His clothes were described as a “long white sleeve shirt, black and red shorts,” and he had a gray bag on.

“Please know that he works as a diver and spearfisherman.” Jacchia told Fox News Digital, “He knows the water very, very well, so it wasn’t at all strange for him to do this.”

His blue and orange Niphean inflatable paddleboard was found nearby by helpful people between 10:30 a.m. and noon on Tuesday, and they called the police, according to Jacchia.

Along with his surfboard, Jacchia said, “Luciano’s wet bag was on it, with a mask, snorkel, gloves, and a water bottle.” The paddle board was discovered 3½ miles from Pompano Beach.

Florida Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Coast Guard, and cops from Miami-Dade and Key Biscayne are all looking for Mercenari. “Boats, helicopters, and planes are looking for him,” Jacchia said. Everything we can is being done to find him. Our family is very close, and we are very upset, but we are not giving up hope.
