Florida Democrats Want Governor De Santis to Stop His Campaign to Ban Books!
In a significant move challenging Governor Ron DeSantis’ (R) recent actions in Florida, a coalition of Democratic lawmakers has penned a forceful letter demanding an end to the state administration’s book-banning initiative. The group, led by Reps. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and Debbie Wasserman Schultz include influential figures like Reps. Lois Frankel, Maxwell Frost, Darren Soto, and Kathy Castor.
This letter comes in the wake of escalating concerns over increasing instances of book bans in Florida’s educational institutions. These bans, the Democrats argue, not only impede the educational process but also infringe upon the First Amendment rights of students.
They underscored this point by referencing the 1982 Supreme Court case, Board of Education v. Pico, which held that school boards cannot remove books from libraries simply because they disagree with the content.
Highlighting alarming statistics, the lawmakers pointed to an American Library Association report which noted a 38% spike in book challenges and bans across the country, totaling 2,571 unique titles last year. This surge in censorship, they argue, creates a toxic environment of repression and marginalization, detrimental to the fundamental principles of learning and understanding.

The letter emphasizes the discriminatory nature of these bans, particularly targeting LGBTQI+ content and issues of race and ethnicity. This, according to the lawmakers, amounts to a systematic silencing of marginalized communities’ narratives, an act they deem contrary to Florida’s legislative ethos.
In a poignant conclusion, the Democrats called on Governor DeSantis to recognize the vital role of diverse stories in cultivating a generation of students who are inclusive and accepting of individuals from all walks of life, irrespective of race, religion, s*xual orientation, gender identity, or other characteristics.
Moreover, Rep. Maxwell Frost recently introduced the Fight Book Bans Act, aiming to empower school districts with federal grants to counter the financial burdens of combating book bans. This Act positions itself as a crucial tool in the defense of educational integrity against censorship and the erosion of historical and factual knowledge in schools.
As this debate unfolds, the eyes of the nation turn to Florida, waiting to see how Governor DeSantis responds to this fervent call for action from his Democratic counterparts. The outcome of this confrontation could set a precedent for how book bans are addressed in the broader American educational landscape.
