Florida Governor DeSantis Signs Bills to Limit Chinese Land Ownership in the State!

CheapNailsalonsnearmeIn a bold move addressing national security concerns, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has enacted a series of bills that significantly limit foreign land ownership in the state, with a particular emphasis on Chinese nationals. The legislation, signed on Monday, marks a decisive step in countering what DeSantis describes as the “malign influence of the Chinese Communist Party” in Florida.

The most controversial of these measures restricts Chinese citizens from purchasing land unless they hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. Additionally, Chinese nationals on non-tourist visas face stringent limitations, being only able to acquire less than two acres of land, and that too, at a minimum distance of five miles from military installations.

This pioneering legal framework also extends its reach to citizens from other countries perceived as adversarial, including Russia, Iran, Cuba, Syria, North Korea, and Venezuela. These nationals are prohibited from buying property within ten miles of military bases, although they retain the liberty to purchase land in other parts of Florida.

The enactment of these laws has sparked a heated debate. Critics, including civil rights advocates and immigrant communities, have raised concerns about potential discrimination against Chinese homeowners and broader implications for other immigrants in Florida.

This sentiment was palpable last month when over a hundred protestors voiced their opposition to the bill, asserting it unfairly targets Florida’s Chinese population and contravenes the ethos of the American dream.

In addition to the land ownership restrictions, the Governor also signed a bill that curtails the ability of colleges and universities to accept gifts or engage in partnerships with institutions in “countries of concern,” without state approval. Further tightening the technological front, the legislation prohibits the use of applications like TikTok, owned by Chinese companies, on government devices and servers.

Governor DeSantis, in his statement, emphasized the necessity of these measures, declaring them vital in safeguarding U.S. interests against the challenges posed by the Chinese Communist Party. The laws are set to take effect on July 1st, heralding a new era in Florida’s approach to international relations and security.
