CNS NewsIn an intricate web of cybercrime spanning from August 2022 to March 2023, 19-year-old Noah Michael Urban from Palm Coast, Florida, found himself at the center of a complex SIM-swapping scheme, leading to his arrest on January 9, 2024. Charged with wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy, Urban allegedly orchestrated a series of attacks that compromised the personal and financial data of at least five individuals, accumulating illicit gains of over $800,000.

Urban, known in the digital underworld by aliases such as “Sosa” and “King Bob,” was not just a lone wolf but a pivotal figure within “Scattered Spider,” a notorious hacking group implicated in a slew of cyber intrusions targeting prominent U.S. tech firms in the summer of 2022.

This group, also referred to as “0ktapus” by security firm Group-IB, gained infamy for its sophisticated social engineering tactics, particularly phishing attacks aimed at employee credentials of companies like Twilio, LastPass, DoorDash, Mailchimp, and Plex. The method of operation for these cyber criminals involved crafting convincing phishing pages that mirrored the Okta authentication interfaces of targeted companies, thereby capturing crucial login details and multi-factor authentication codes.
