However, the situation escalated quickly. According to court documents, Samuels-Catalan responded aggressively. She allegedly began cursing at the employee, blatantly disregarding his request. Her refusal was rooted in her observation that the staff member was not in uniform, which she took as a reason to dismiss his authority.
The tension heightened when, as per the staff member’s account, she revved the engine of her SUV and drove at high speed directly towards him. In what could have been a fatal moment, the employee managed to evade the vehicle. He described the experience as terrifying, stating he feared for his life and only avoided injury by leaping into a bush on the side of the road.
When law enforcement officials interviewed Samuels-Catalan five days after the incident, her version contrasted starkly with the account of the school employee. She denied any intention of hitting the employee with her vehicle. Samuels-Catalan argued that her primary concern was navigating around large speed humps in the parking lot, which she claimed had damaged her bumper on two previous occasions.
She also expressed that she did not perceive the employee to be in her path as she attempted to exit the parking lot. Despite her assertions, the authorities proceeded with her arrest. Samuels-Catalan was charged with aggravated assault on a public or private education employee. This charge is particularly serious, reflecting the potential danger her actions posed to the school staff member.
Following her arrest, she spent a night in jail and was released upon posting a $10,000 bond. In a subsequent legal development, Samuels-Catalan entered a plea of not guilty in December. Her arraignment was scheduled for January 16, a date that would likely bring further details to light and proceed with the legal adjudication of this disturbing incident.
