Florida Officials Say Measles-Exposed Unvaccinated Children Can Skip Quarantine!

CNS NewsA recent measles outbreak at Manatee Bay Elementary School in Florida has raised concerns among health officials, particularly due to the low vaccination rate at the school. With a confirmed sixth case of measles, fears of a larger outbreak loom. Despite this, Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo has made a controversial decision regarding quarantine measures for unvaccinated students who may have been exposed to the virus.

Ladapo, known for his anti-vaccine rhetoric, issued a statement allowing unvaccinated students to forego the recommended quarantine period. Traditionally, exposed and unvaccinated individuals are advised to quarantine for 21 days due to the highly contagious nature of measles.

However, Ladapo’s letter to parents indicates a deviation from this protocol, citing the community’s high immunity rate and the disruption to families and education as reasons to defer quarantine decisions to parents or guardians.

The decision comes amidst reports of over 200 absences at the school, indicating a significant level of concern among parents regarding the outbreak. The cluster of measles cases originated from a third-grade student who had not recently traveled, suggesting possible community transmission.

With only 89.31 percent of students vaccinated during the 2023/2024 school year, approximately 114 students remain susceptible to the virus due to their vaccination status. Measles, a highly contagious virus spread through respiratory transmission, poses significant risks, particularly to unvaccinated or immunocompromised individuals.

Symptoms typically manifest between eight to 14 days after exposure, with the disease capable of spreading easily through airborne transmission. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that up to 90 percent of susceptible individuals may become infected upon exposure to the virus.

Measles symptoms include high fever, runny nose, cough, red and watery eyes, and a distinctive rash. Tragically, up to 3 in 1,000 children may die from measles infections, highlighting the seriousness of the disease.
