Florida Republicans Just Can’t Stop: A New Bill Would Almost Totally Stop Abortions!
CheapNailsalonsnearme– In a bold move that amplifies the ongoing debate over reproductive rights in the United States, Florida Republican State Representative David Borrero introduced a bill, H.B. 1519, that seeks to ban nearly all abortions in the state. This legislation, filed on a Monday, marks a significant escalation in abortion restrictions, going beyond the state’s current law that prohibits abortions after 15 weeks.
The proposed bill stipulates that abortions can only be performed if they are necessary to save the life of the pregnant woman. It notably excludes exceptions for cases of rape, incest, or instances involving minors. The definition of a medical emergency, as per the bill, includes situations where an abortion is required to prevent the death of a pregnant woman due to a physical disorder, illness, or injury, potentially caused by the pregnancy itself.
Penalties for violating this proposed law are severe. Performing or attempting to perform an abortion outside the allowed circumstances is classified as a third-degree felony. Physicians could face up to 10 years in jail, fines up to $100,000, or both for contravening these restrictions.
The bill has drawn sharp criticism from opponents, including Florida Senate minority leader, Democrat Lauren Book. She described the bill as a desperate attempt for relevance by its sponsor, highlighting the political sensitivity and the evolving public opinion surrounding abortion rights.
A new bill in Florida’s state legislature would establish that personhood exists from the moment of fertilization, effectively banning all abortions, except to save a patient’s life. https://t.co/AENgPpeCU7

The book underscored the proximity of achieving a ballot initiative that could restore abortion rights, suggesting that the bill is out of step with the majority public opinion. Governor Ron DeSantis previously signed a bill banning abortion after six weeks, a law set to take effect if the state’s current 15-week ban is upheld by the Supreme Court.
If enacted, Borrero’s bill would supersede this six-week ban, creating one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation. However, the future of these laws remains uncertain. Abortion advocates in Florida have successfully gathered enough signatures to place an amendment on the state’s 2024 ballot.
This amendment aims to guarantee abortion access up until viability, typically around 24 weeks. The outcome of this ballot initiative, alongside the legal challenges to existing laws, will significantly shape the future of abortion rights in Florida.
