Former H-E-B Chief Donates Money to Candidates Gov. Greg Abbott Wants to Remove from Office!
CNS News– The Chairman and former CEO of H-E-B, Charles Butt, known for his staunch support of public schools, has made headlines with his recent political action. Through the Charles Butt Public Education PAC, Butt injected $1.3 million into the campaigns of nine Republican candidates in Texas.
Notably, seven of these candidates stand in opposition to Governor Greg Abbott’s proposed private school voucher program, which would allocate taxpayer dollars for private school education. Butt, the sole donor to the PAC, strategically directed funds mostly to incumbents targeted by Abbott, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.
Among the recipients of substantial donations were Texas state representatives Steve Allison, Ernest Bailes, Gary VanDeaver, and John Kuempel. These funds proved instrumental in helping Allison and Kuempel outruns challengers supported by Governor Abbott, with Allison receiving approximately $340,000 and Kuempel $138,000.
Governor Abbott’s recent efforts to support proponents of private school vouchers come in the wake of a failed attempt to implement such a program last year. Despite arguments from supporters of private school vouchers citing affordability issues for some families, historically, the Texas House has remained resistant to such proposals. Last year, 21 Republican holdouts prevented a voucher bill from advancing to Abbott’s desk.

Charles Butt’s advocacy for public education is deeply rooted. With a net worth of $7.6 billion as of last year, Butt has long been a prominent supporter of education initiatives. In 2017, he pledged $100 million towards the establishment of the Holdsworth Center, a nonprofit organization aimed at bolstering public school leadership. Additionally, Butt joined the Giving Pledge in 2018, committing to donate a portion of his wealth to charitable causes.
Butt’s dedication to public education has not only earned him admiration but has also positively impacted the perception of H-E-B among Texans. Many individuals have expressed gratitude towards H-E-B upon learning of the PAC donations, with some even pledging to shift their grocery shopping to the retailer in support of Butt’s educational endeavors.
