Freezing Temperatures Cause Widespread Cancellations in New Orleans This MLK Weekend

New Orleans area officials have canceled Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations  scheduled for Monday ahead of the winter freeze next week.

In lieu of the annual MLK parade, New Orleans will hold a small recognition ceremony at the MLK monument on South Claiborne Avenue at 10 a.m. Monday.

Jefferson Parish has also canceled its parade and banquet ceremony. Kenner’s parade and march has been postponed for a later date.

Authorities anticipate freezing temperatures and precipitation Tuesday that could bring ice on roadways, bridges and elevated roadways.

The New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness has urged the public to remain weather aware and to protect pets, pipes and plants.

The New Orleans and Central Business District Historic District Landmarks Commissions’ Architectural Review Committee meetings are moved to Thursday in the 7th floor Conference Room A.

  • New Orleans HDLC ARC: 12:30 p.m.

Government buildings

All Jefferson Parish and St. Bernard Parish government facilities will be closed on Tuesday including public libraries, Head Start and Early Head Start centers, American Job Centers and JPRD parks and playgrounds.
