CNS News– On February 6th, families gathered to advocate for transgender rights in Georgia. Among them was Lena Kotler, who brought her two children to humanize the cause. As they awaited a meeting with Democratic Sen. Kim Jackson, they encountered Republican Sen. Carden Summers, sponsor of the state’s bathroom ban bill.
Little did Summers know, one of the children present, 8-year-old Aleix, was transgender. According to Kotler and witnesses, Summers greeted them, unaware of Aleix’s identity. Kotler expressed concerns for her children’s safety, prompting Summers to assure her, “I’m going to protect kids like you.”
Kotler then revealed Aleix’s transgender identity. Summers stumbled in response, emphasizing ensuring Aleix’s safety in bathrooms, but retreated when questioned further. This exchange highlighted the flaws of anti-trans bills like Summers’ Senate Bill 438. Such legislation risks ensnaring non-transgender individuals and endangering transgender children.

Despite authoring the bill, Summers recognized the need to protect transgender youth from bathroom harassment. SB 438 is part of a series of bills targeting transgender individuals in Georgia, including Senate Bill 88, aiming to disclose transgender youth’s identities to parents. Kotler later met supportive senators, emphasizing the importance of affirming transgender identities.
While the impact on Summers remains uncertain, SB 438 awaits a hearing. Kotler and her children remain steadfast in their advocacy. Aleix, echoing family tradition, vows not to yield, recognizing the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
