CNS News–After extensive negotiations, a $118 billion bipartisan agreement aimed at reforming key immigration policies under the Biden administration was revealed by a group of Senate negotiators. Despite the positive reception in the Senate, the proposal met immediate resistance in the House, with GOP leaders branding it as “dead on arrival.”
The deal, heralded by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer as a significant step towards addressing border issues, is entangled in a broader national security funding package that includes substantial aid for Ukraine and Israel. The proposal allocates over $20 billion for border enhancements, including funding for the border wall and the recruitment of new asylum officers, and introduces measures intended to streamline the asylum process.
Additionally, it encompasses security aid totaling $60.06 billion for Ukraine, $14.1 billion for Israel, and significant humanitarian assistance for conflict-affected regions. The bill seeks to impose stringent controls on migrant entry, with provisions to shut down the border under certain conditions and expedite asylum claims.
